Forget hype and get back to leading, Rafidah tells PM after RM2.6b case put to rest

Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz has cautioned Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak not to assume that all was well with his administration. — File picKUALA LUMPUR, Jan 27 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak must refocus efforts on restoring Malaysia's economy now that he is no longer distracted by the controversy of the RM2.6 billion donation, Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz said today.
Commenting on Attorney-General Tan Sri Apandi Ali's declaration that the case was now closed, the former international trade and industry minister also cautioned Najib not to assume that all was well with his administration when he had been engaged with the issue.
“Now, what I really want to say is… please seriously go back to governing and administration. Please focus on what's ailing the economy and nation… please forget the hype and slogans of communication… these only waste money and have superficial impact,” Rafidah wrote on Facebook today.
She also urged the prime minister to “rein in” his various teams and remind them of the oath of office that they took upon their appointments as well as the “loose cannons” in his administration.
Rafidah then pressed Najib to avoid politicising vital issues, saying that doing so was unhealthy and divisive.
“Let honesty and integrity always be the guide and motivator. Just do what is right… (even) if it is not popular...” she added.
Rafidah added that while Apandi has declared the case closed on the RM2.6 billion donation, the latter must be prepared to explain the rationale for his decision, which she said was causing noticeable chatter on social media.
She further said that the case should be a lesson to the prime minister not to solicit donations that cannot be easily or swiftly explained, regardless of how badly Umno needed funds.
The former Wanita Umno chief pointed out that the party had functioned seamlessly for decades based on the unity, commitment and dedication of its members, and should not need to seek external financial aid when it could count on the “unpaid work” of its grassroots.
Apandi yesterday announced that he found no evidence of wrongdoing in the corruption probes on SRC International, a unit formerly owned by 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), and the transfer of a RM2.6 billion donation into Najib's private accounts.
He added the he will return the investigation papers to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and instruct them to close the cases.
Najib yesterday said that he welcomed Apandi’s decision on the SRC International and RM2.6 billion cases, and urged the public to put the matter to rest.
In a statement on his Facebook page, the prime minister also called the issue an “unnecessary distraction” for the country and said Apandi’s decision only confirmed his position all along that no crime had been committed.
An MACC official today said the commission is likely to appeal Apandi's decision. source
