KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 12 — A campaign has been launched to encourage domestic travel among Malaysians this year, as the government looks to local tourism as one way to increase revenue to boost the country’s flailing economy.
The Malaysian Inbound Tourism Association (Mita), along with the Tourism Malaysia, announced today its “Go Domestic” campaign aimed at encouraging Malaysians to travel to local tourism destinations this year.
Mita will be holding its first ever Tourism Fair from January 29 to January 31 this month where it is expected to attract participation from more than 140 industry players from the local tourism industry and 20,000 visitors.
Tourism Malaysia director-general Datuk Mirza Mohammad Taiyab said with the fall of the ringgit, such a campaign could not have come at a better time.
“This event is timely... at a time when the country is focusing on domestic tourism in light of the currency situation which does not favour overseas travel,” he said during his speech at the event.
Mirza said the “Go Domestic” tagline was unveiled some time last year but had failed to receive an encouraging response so far.
Similar taglines that will be promoted, he said, is the “Cuti-cuti 1Malaysia Dekat Je” which was launched back in June last year.
“This year we are going to recover, coming out of 2014 (and into 2015) we had all unsettled business, the (airline) tragedies, floods and haze,” Mirza told a news conference later.
He said there will be a projected 66.8 million local tourists this year, an expected increase from last year's total of 63.7 million.
Mirza also said revenue from domestic tourism is expected to increase from RM43.5 billion last year to RM45.7 billion this year
