Many feared killed in Lagos market clash

Many feared killed in Lagos market clash
IGP Solomon Arase
Six people are reportedly killed while some policemen have been critically injured by hoodlums in a riot at the Lagos popular perishable market in Mile 12.

Though no official confirmation has yet be made by the police authorities, Daily Trust reports that Ikorodu road was inaccessible from Ketu at the time of filing this report while trading is said to have been put on hold at the market as a result of the clash.

Daily Trust learnt that a detachment of soldiers have arrived at the market to restore peace while the market has been closed.

A trader at the market, Mrs. Anike Olota told Daily Trust in a telephone conversation that a commercial motorcyclist who is believed to be from the north injured a Yoruba boy in an accident at Agiliti area of Mile 12.

This is said to have degenerated into what appears to be a communal clash between Yorubas and Hausas who have remained rivals over control of the market.
Mrs. Olota said the rioters gathered hoodlums who are currently stopping all vehicles and vandalising them on the busy Ikorodu road.

She said a school in the area has been razed down. The police spokesman in Lagos was not immediately available for comment.
