Why we demolished Oshodi Market – LASG
Lagos State Government in the early hours of yesterday demolished the over 40 years old Owonifari Market at Oshodi, citing security challenges and need to transform the area to meet the status of a structured park in a mega city.Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde said the Owonifari loop will be transformed into an ultra modern bus terminus with new bus shelters that are befitting of a structured park in a mega city.
He said that the affected traders and shop owners had been relocated to a new Isopakodowo Market at Bolade area of Oshodi.
The demolition exercise was supervised by the Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, the Commissioner of Environment, Dr. Babatunde Adejare, officials of Police, Kick Against Indiscipline and other top government officials.
Some of the traders who spoke to Nigerian Pilot said the haste with which the government carried out the demolition was shocking as some of the traders were yet return from the yuletide holiday in the eastern part of the country. The demolition completed about 7:45AM
